Serious Winter Conditions Call for Studded Tires

When roads turn icy, studded tires give you the extra grip you need to stay safe. These tires are equipped with tiny metal studs that extend beyond the tread, digging into ice and packed snow to provide superior traction.

  • Unmatched traction on ice – Studs bite into slick surfaces for safer driving.

  • Better stopping power – Enhanced side-to-side and front-to-back grip means more control when it matters most.

  • Ideal for unpredictable weather – Whether it’s freezing rain, hard-packed snow, or sudden ice patches, studded tires keep you prepared.

  • Studdable off-road options available – Some off-road tires can also be fitted with studs for added performance.

Bottom line: Studded tires perform best on ice. Period.

📞 Call us today at 780-569-0654 to book your appointment at Canadian Auto / Napa Auto Care Centre and get your tires studded before the next storm hits.

Rely on the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake Symbol (3PMS)

Tire Options for Winter Driving

Motorists essentially have three choices when preparing for winter:

  1. All-Season Tires

    • Designed for general use, but not optimized for cold temperatures.

    • Provide reduced grip and longer stopping distances in winter conditions.

  2. All-Season Tires with the Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMS) Symbol

    • Meet or exceed government and industry snow traction standards.

    • Offer moderately better traction than standard all-seasons.

    • Good for occasional or light-to-medium snowfalls.

    • Still not ideal for severe Canadian winters.

  3. Dedicated Winter Tires

    • Specially engineered for cold-weather driving.

    • Made with softer rubber compounds that remain flexible below 7°C.

    • Provide superior grip and significantly shorter stopping distances on ice, snow, slush, and even cold dry pavement.

    • By far the safest and most reliable option.

Why Dedicated Winter Tires Are Best

  • Temperature Performance: All-season tires harden in cold weather, reducing traction. Winter tires stay pliable and maintain grip.

  • Stopping Distance: Winter tires stop faster on icy and snowy roads compared to both types of all-season tires.

  • Safety: They’re specifically designed to handle the harsh and unpredictable winter driving conditions common across Canada.

Recommendation: If you want maximum safety and performance in Canadian winters, dedicated winter tires are the best choice. If you face only occasional snow, 3PMS all-season tires could be a compromise, but they won’t match the safety and control of true winter tires.

Choose the Right Tires and Make Them Last

Finding Your Perfect Tire Match

When it’s time for new tires, three factors should guide your choice: vehicle fit, driving conditions, and performance preferences.

Tire manufacturers design options for every kind of driver. Whether you value fuel efficiency, a smooth and quiet ride, long-lasting durability, or maximum grip and handling, there’s a tire tailored for you. But remember—no single tire excels in every area. That’s why selecting the right match is so important.

To get the best handling and performance your vehicle was built to deliver, always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for tire size, speed rating, and load rating. Matching these ensures not only performance but also safety and efficiency on the road.

In short: the “perfect tire” isn’t universal—it’s the tire that best fits your vehicle, your driving style, and your priorities.

WHEEL AND TIRE TERMS GLOSSARY

Wheel and Tire Terms Glossary

Air Pressure

The measure of the force exerted by the air inside a tire, measured in pounds per square inch (psi).

Aspect Ratio

The relationship between a tire’s section height and its section width. It is calculated by dividing the section height by the section width. For example, if the section height is half of the section width, the aspect ratio is 50. In a tire size description, it would be the “40” in P205/40R16. Also called the tire’s profile or series.

Asymmetric

Tires that have differing tread patterns on each half of the tire.

Camber

The angle of the tire and wheel centerline relative to a completely vertical line.

Cast

Wheels manufactured by pouring liquid metal into a mold.

  • Low-pressure casting: metal is poured in.

  • Counter-pressure casting: metal is vacuum-pulled into the mold, reducing impurities and creating a stronger wheel.

Caster

The angle between the vehicle’s steering pivot axis and vertical.

DOT

Stands for Department of Transportation. The 10-digit code following the DOT mark gives the tire’s production week/year, manufacturer, plant, tire line, and size.

Forged

A wheel manufacturing process in which a solid aluminum billet is compressed under high pressure and heat into a wheel. Produces lighter and stronger wheels than casting.

Hub-Centric

A wheel designed with a center bore that exactly matches the vehicle’s hub diameter.

Hub Rings

Plastic or aluminum rings placed between the wheel and hub to ensure perfect centering. Prevents vibrations even when the tire and wheel assembly is balanced.

Load Index

A number representing the maximum weight a tire can support. Passenger cars use a numeric code, while truck tires use ply rating codes.

M+S

A sidewall marking indicating the tire is approved for Mud & Snow use.

Mounting

Installing tires onto wheels.

Overinflation

Inflating a tire beyond the manufacturer’s recommended air pressure. May temporarily improve performance but reduces comfort, damages tires, and stresses suspension components.

P-Metric System

A tire sizing system specifying tread width (in mm), aspect ratio, construction type, and rim diameter (in inches). Example: P195/50R15.

Plus Sizing

Changing from the stock tire size to larger wheels and lower-profile tires, while keeping the overall diameter within 3% of OEM specs. Enhances looks and handling, but incorrect sizing may affect transmission, fuel economy, and braking systems.

PSI

Unit of tire pressure: Pounds per Square Inch.

Radial Tire

Tires with plies running perpendicular (90°) to the tread, reinforced by circumferential belt plies.

Rim Width

Distance between the inner flanges of a wheel rim.

Rotation

Moving tires front-to-rear and side-to-side in a set pattern to prevent uneven wear and extend tread life.

Section Width

The distance between the outer sidewalls of an inflated (but unloaded) tire.

Sidewall

The area of a tire between the tread and bead.

Speed Rating

A letter code defining a tire’s maximum safe speed. Examples: Q, S, T, U, H, V, Z, W, Y.

Tire Sizing Guide

A guide that helps select the correct tire size for a vehicle.

Tread Depth

The measurement from the top of the tread to the bottom of its grooves, typically measured in 32nds of an inch.

Tread Pattern

The design of grooves, blocks, sipes, and channels on a tire.

Tread Shaving

Removing some tread for optimized racing performance.

Tread Wear

How long a tire lasts, measured in miles or kilometers.

Tread Wear Indicators

Raised rubber bars inside grooves marking the legal wear limit (2/32″). When flush with tread, the tire must be replaced.

Tread Width

The width of the tread, usually in millimeters. Example: in 195/50R15, the tread width is 195mm.

Underinflation

A tire with less than recommended air pressure for its load. Can cause tire deflection, rollover risk, and faster wear.

UTQG

Uniform Tire Quality Grading: a DOT-developed system rating treadwear, traction, and temperature resistance for passenger tires.

Wheel Alignment

Adjustment of suspension geometry to set caster, camber, and toe correctly.

Wheel Backspacing

The distance from the wheel mounting pad to the back edge of the rim. Different from offset.

Wheel Balance

Even weight distribution in a tire-wheel assembly. Achieved by adding weights to eliminate vibration and uneven wear.

Wheel Bolt Pattern

Arrangement of bolt holes on a wheel. Example: 5×120 means five lugs, with 120mm between opposite bolts. Some wheels are dual-pattern for versatility.

Wheel Centerbore

The hole in the wheel center that fits onto the hub. Oversized bores require hub rings for perfect centering.

Wheel Fitment Tool

An online tool used to calculate compatible wheels for a vehicle.

Wheel Guide

Specifications detailing wheel diameter, center bore, bolt pattern, lug type, and finish.

Wheel Offset

The distance between the wheel’s mounting surface and its true centerline.

  • Positive offset: Mounting surface is toward the front, pulling wheels inward.

  • Negative offset: Mounting surface is toward the back, pushing wheels outward.

Wheel Weights

Clip-on, stick-on, or adhesive weights added to a wheel for balancing.

Canadian auto napa provides complete wheel alignment, tire balancing and tire changes services on all vehicle makes and models, from imports to domestics.

  • Why A/T is popular: Strikes the best balance between capability and comfort.

Yes — you can safely mix nitrogen and regular air in tires. Both are made up of mostly the same gas (air is already about 78% nitrogen), so there’s no chemical incompatibility or safety issue. If you add regular air into a nitrogen-filled tire, you’ll just reduce the nitrogen purity, but the tire will still function normally.

Advantages of Nitrogen in Tires

  • Reduced pressure loss: Nitrogen molecules are slightly larger than oxygen, so they leak out more slowly through the rubber, helping tires maintain pressure longer.

  • Less moisture: Nitrogen is usually supplied dry, reducing the risk of corrosion on steel wheels and sensors compared to compressed air that may contain moisture.

  • More stable pressure: Nitrogen expands/contracts less with temperature swings, making it popular in race cars, airplanes, and heavy trucks.

Disadvantages of Nitrogen in Tires

  • Cost: Filling with nitrogen typically costs $5–$10 per tire, and even simple top-ups may have a fee. In contrast, compressed air at gas stations is cheap or free.

  • Availability: Nitrogen service stations aren’t as common. If you’re traveling or in a small town, finding one can be inconvenient.

  • Diminishing returns for daily drivers: For normal passenger vehicles, the performance and longevity benefits of nitrogen are minor compared to simply checking and maintaining proper tire pressure with regular air.

Bottom Line

If your tires are already filled with nitrogen, topping up with air is completely fine — it just lowers the nitrogen concentration. For everyday drivers, the key is maintaining the correct tire pressure, regardless of whether you use nitrogen or regular air.

🚗 Tire Maintenance Done Right: Check Your Pressure Monthly!

To make your tires last longer, perform better, and save you money on fuel, regular inspection and care are essential.

Your vehicle’s tires support 95% of its weight and affect nearly every aspect of handling and performance. That’s why keeping them properly inflated is so critical to both safety and efficiency.

👉 Why it matters:

  • Improper inflation reduces ride quality, fuel efficiency, and performance.

  • Over- or under-inflated tires wear out faster, costing you more in the long run.

  • Properly inflated tires improve handling and keep you safer on the road.

👉 Pro Tip:
You can find the recommended tire pressure on your vehicle’s placard — usually located:

  • On the inside of the driver’s door or door frame

  • In the glove compartment

  • On the fuel door or trunk

Check your tire pressure at least once a month and before long trips to get the most out of your tires.

  • The winter season is approaching ❄️ start your winter right with savings.
  • Get a mail-in rebate with the purchase of 4 select new passenger or light truck winter tires. Ask us for a full list of winter tire rebates!
  • If you need a new set of tires this winter, now is the perfect time. Get up to $100 in rebates when buying an eligible set of winter tires. Visit us at Canadian Auto/Napa Auto Care Centre to start your winter right 📲 780-569-0654

Tire Rotation

Best practice for making sure your tires avoid sudden failures and keep working properly, is tire rotation.

Did you know that you should have your tires rotated every 10,000 kilometres? This ensures that your tires don’t have sudden failures and that your tires last longer.

Below -7 Degrees

Tire rubber will begin to stiffen as the weather gets colder. Winter tires maintain their elasticity even at extremely low temperatures approaching -30°C and below, thus providing superior traction and grip.

Installing winter tires will improve surface grip in every type of road condition at temperatures below 7°C.

All-Season tires

All-Season tires offer decent grip in most conditions but are optimized to deliver long tire life and good fuel economy. 🚘

The downside of low tread wear and low rolling resistance is all-seasons’ harder rubber compound, which loses pliability as temperatures drop.

As soon as you have a cold rubber compound on cold pavement, your stopping distances are greater, your cornering isn’t as crisp. If it is cold, performance is degraded.

Fuel Efficiency.

Tire industry research shows that one third of drivers typically have at least one tire underinflated by more than 10%.

Tip: measure your tire pressure monthly and do not rely on visual inspections to determine the correct inflation pressure – a tire can be underinflated by 20% or more and look normal.

Want to learn more about the best tires for fuel efficiency? Give us a call today 🤙 780-569-0654

Replace your tires?

All tires sold in Canada are manufactured with “wear bars”.

These colored bars become exposed when there is less than 1.6 mm of tread depth remaining on your tire. Tires must be replaced when the wear bar is visible.

Consult your tire technician for more information on when to replace your tires.

Car tire tread wear – How much is too much wear?

It is important not to drive on tires with too much tread wear as this reduces the traction you have on the road making it easier to slip, hydroplane and even pick up a puncture. Here are the minimum depths you need to stay safe:

  • 6/32″ – tread depth is ok
  • 5/32″ – start thinking of replacement – you could have trouble in wet weather
  • 4/32″ – replace your tires as soon as possible

The best and most accurate way to measure your tread is with a proper gauge. They are easy to use, and you can find them at most gas stations or hardware stores. Find the shallowest groove on your tire and insert the pin on the gauge. read the scale and compare the results with the numbers above.

Tire Repairable Areas

Repairable Areas

  • Green Zone (center of tread):
Punctures here may be repaired under certain circumstances. This is the safest and most effective repair area.
  • Yellow Zone (edge of shoulder):
Punctures may sometimes be repaired, but only if the puncture angle points toward the center of the tread.

Non-Repairable Areas

  • Red Zone (sidewall and shoulder):
Punctures here cannot be repaired. This area flexes too much while driving, making repairs unsafe.

Conditions Where Repair Is Not Allowed

A tire will not be repaired if:

  • Tread depth is below 4/32”.
  • Tire is older than 6 years.
  • There is sidewall damage.
  • Tire has been driven while flat.
  • Puncture is larger than 1/4”.
  • Damage is a slice that cannot be sealed properly.

Special Note on Tire Width

If the tread pattern does not have outer grooves to define the shoulder, then punctures must not be repaired if:

  • They fall within 25% of the tire width (measured from the edge).
  • Example: For a 205 mm tire, punctures within 52 mm (2 inches) of the edge cannot be repaired.

👉 In summary:
Repairs are only safe in the central green area, with some exceptions in the yellow zone. Anything near the shoulder or sidewall (red area) should lead to tire replacement for safety.

Tire repair

wheel alignments $169.00 & up

mount and balance $159.95 & up

tire swap (Winter/summer) $59.95 & up

Determining What Size Tires, You Need

The correct tire for your vehicle will be a unique combination of different variables including the width, height, and diameter of the tire, as well as a combination the tire’s load capacity rating and speed ability. To find out what size tires you need and what speed/load rating your vehicle requires, check your owner’s manual. If the information is not listed there, it can usually be found inside the door jamb of the driver’s door, inside the glove box door, or inside the fuel tank hatch.

Determining What Size Tires, You Need

What Do the Numbers on The Sidewall Actually Mean?

Aspect ratio: The aspect ratio is essentially a measure of how tall your tire is. The larger the number, the taller the tire. The number is calculated by dividing the height of the tire by its width, then turning the result into a percentage. Your typical all-season passenger car tire will have an aspect ratio somewhere between 65 and 80.

tire Load index

Load index: Your tire’s load index lets you know how much weight the tire was designed to carry safely. By using the load index chart displayed below, you can match the rating up with the number of pounds the tire can support when it is inflated to its maximum air pressure. For example, if your load rating is 81, you can then determine that the tire was engineered to carry 1,019 pounds when fully inflated. Multiply this weight by four to find out the maximum carrying capacity for your vehicle. When buying aftermarket or replacement tires, it is important to find a model that matches the load index that was on the original equipment.

If you cannot find the information in any of these locations, read the information off of the sidewall on your existing tires. Here is an example of the types of numbers you want to look for:

What Do the Numbers on The Sidewall Actually Mean?

You can write all these numbers down and then bring them to Canadian Auto/Napa Auto Care Centre to see what tires are available in this size. That is all the information you will need to find tires that will fit your car as the manufacturer intended.

Speed rating: The speed rating is a number issued by the U.S. government which signifies how well a tire can reach and maintain a certain speed. Speed ratings are simply lettering which correspond to a specific top speed. Keep in mind that these are not recommended speeds to drive at, but simply a way to get a better idea of how well the tire will handle (tires with a hire speed rating are likely to provide better traction and handling). When buying new tires, always choose 4 tires with identical speed ratings. Mixing up the specifications on your tires will result in serious and unsafe driving conditions. It is also not recommended that you downgrade the speed rating on your tires. Always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines and buy tires with ratings that are identical to the original stock equipment.

Tire Speed rating

  1. Pre-Existing Wheel, Fastener, and Stud Damage

2.1 Canadian Auto shall not be responsible for any pre-existing condition involving wheel rims, studs, lug nuts, or related components, including cross-threading, stretching, seizing, prior over-torquing, corrosion, or damage arising from any previous service provider.
