Why do you need a vehicle alignment?
A vehicle alignment (also called a wheel alignment) adjusts the angles of your wheels so they are positioned correctly relative to the road and each other. Proper alignment is important for several reasons:
- Extends Tire Life
When wheels are misaligned, tires can wear unevenly and much faster. For example:
- Excessive wear on the inside or outside edge of the tire
- Feathered or scalloped tread patterns
Replacing tires is expensive, so alignment helps protect that investment.
- Improves Handling and Safety
A properly aligned vehicle:
- Tracks straight down the road.
- Responds more predictably to steering inputs.
- Provides better stability during braking and cornering.
Misalignment can cause the vehicle to pull left or right, making it harder to control.
- Increases Fuel Efficiency
When wheels are not aligned correctly, the tires create more rolling resistance. This forces the engine to work harder and can slightly reduce fuel economy.
- Protects Suspension Components
Driving with poor alignment puts additional stress on:
- Ball joints
- Tie rods
- Bushings
- Other steering and suspension parts
Over time, this can lead to premature wear and costly repairs.
Signs You May Need an Alignment
- Vehicle pulls to one side.
- Steering wheel is off-centre when driving straight.
- Uneven tire wear
- Steering wheel vibrates.
- After hitting a pothole, curb, or being involved in a collision
- After replacing suspension or steering components
How Often?
Many manufacturers recommend checking alignment annually or every 20,000–30,000 km, but it is a clever idea to have it inspected whenever you install new tires or notice any of the symptoms above.
If you are in Edmonton, alignment checks are especially worthwhile after winter because potholes and rough roads can easily knock a vehicle out of alignment.
Regular alignments help extend tire life, improve safety, and keep your vehicle driving smoothly.
